Cable-less multi-sensor pipeline inspection
with integrated leak detection
For Potable Water,
Wastewater, Hydropower and Industrial Applications
United States Patent No. 9,804,102 B2 Oct. 31, 2017
MTA Pipe-Inspector allows the cable-less and complete optical and acoustic inspection of transport pipelines without interrupting operation. In contrast to wired video inspection systems, this procedure operates wirelessly, so that the continuous inspection of long sections up to 50km length is possible.
MTA Pipe-Inspector overcomes 90° bends and is used in pipelines from DN 100 to DN 3000 regardless of the material. MTA Pipe-Inspector is applicable in hard-to-reach pipelines such as airports, highways, industrial or other access sensitive areas.
Thanks to a pressure resistance of up to 100bar MTA Pipe-Inspector can be even used the inspection of hydropower pipelines e.g. for commissioning inspections.
MTA Pipe-Inspector floats battery powered and cableless in the pipeline fluid providing continuously data from inside for determining inspected pipeline’s condition without excavation or pipe cutting.
The device is introduced by a kind of pig trap at existing T-pieces, at tanks or vents and can be retrieved for the inspection data analysis at a defined endpoint.

LAUNCH & RETRIEVAL
Device launch and retrieval in pressurized pipelines
Project year: 2017
Diameter: DN 600/500
Material: Cement mortar lined cast iron
Inspection Length: 670m
In order to detect possible leakage and evaluate the general pipeline condition, DC Water, the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority, decided to optically and acoustically inspect one of the oldest parts of the city`s drinking water network.
Diameter: DN 500
Pipeline length: 3,700m
MTA Pipe-Inspector: PW-DN225
Unexpected foreign object “Hammer” found in pipeline
Diameter: DN 2000
Pressure: PN 6 – PN 20
The outstanding feature of this video isn’t the image display but rather the sound. On 1401.9m you will hear the typical structure-borne noise indicating a leakage. The turbidity of the water was caused by heavy rains shortly before the inspection, so that the visibility was affected accordingly.
Diameter: DN 200
Pressure: PN 16
Diameters: DN 250 | DN 300 | DN 600
Diameter: DN 100
Material: Ductile iron with cement mortar lining
Pressure: PN 5
